Facebook is a social networking website that seems to be sweeping the internet community with some force of late. I love it. It’s just so… daft. You register, add a few snippets of information to your profile and the next thing you know, people are sending you fish for your virtual aquarium, throwing (virtual) beer at you, poking you (virtually) and inviting you to games of virtual scrabble*. Wonderful. You can also join groups of like-minded folk, for example BabiesEverywhere and I agree that Colin Firth will always be our Mr Darcy and I can declare my undying love of all things Top Gear.
It’s a fabulous way of wasting time. It has even torn me away from the Mumsnet talk boards (although not completely). Go and have a look – you won’t regret it. You can trounce me at scrabble if you like.
*Scrabble runs in my blood. My Gran was an avid player – she even had a special dictionary. She once missed a flight to Hong Kong because she was playing a game with her sister in the airport lounge and they were so engrossed they missed the final call. Sadly I am crap at it. Really, really crap. But I am getting better now that I understand what all the different coloured squares mean.
Blue Witch asked a very interesting question about blogging in general last Friday – “Why do fewer people comment on serious issues any more?”.
This got me thinking. When I first started blogging, way back when Little’un wasn’t much more than a meaningful glance on a Friday night, my intention was to blog about all kinds of issues… parenting, my life in general, sport and current affairs or anything else that tickled my author bone. Is that happening? Erm, nope… lots of pictures of Little’un looking cute and that’s pretty much it. What amazes me is that an average of 30 people a day still bother to drop by, although I’m sure the majority of those are accidental visitors.
So what happened?
I often see/hear/read of an issue and think, “Ooooh I could write something really interesting and insightful about that!”. Then I don’t. I’m too tired at the end of the day/out and about enjoying family (real) life/too busy at work/entertaining Little’un (very much a preferred pastime)/doing dull houseworky stuff. No time for thinking about issues that mean something to me, never mind actually writing about them.
Commenting on other peoples’ blogs is something else I generally don’t do any more. I have my work cut out just keeping up with reading the blogs I’m interested in. You should feel honoured if I comment on your blog, it is a favour rarely bestowed (funnily enough I found the time to tell Pewari that I hate her recently for putting a link on her blog to an highly addictive little online game, the last thing I need 😉 )
So there you have it. A post that I have had to put some thought into. I’ll be back in six months or so with another one… in the meantime, sit back, relax and enjoy the gratuitous “haven’t I got a beautiful daughter” posts.
I am lonely.
I only have two friends, which happen to be my brothers so they don’t count.
Please will someone who knows how to work it come along and give me a clue???
I thank you.
I love my WordPress stats page, I look at it several times a day to see how many people have passed through and how they got here.
I also love the Clustrmap widget in my sidebar – go and have a look if you haven’t already – which shows where all my readers originate from. I note with a ridiculous amount of pride and pleasure that as of yesterday I have had visitors from every populated continent as someone on the Uruguay/Brazil border has left their mark. I only await Antarctica for a complete set, but I shouldn’t think there are too many people there who are interested in my ramblings. (I will say very quietly that a large number of my international visitors appear not to bother coming back)
I am also very fond of my WeatherPixie. She has a very natty wardrobe which tends to be rather more suitable for the prevailing conditions than my own.
I have more fun looking at my own site and finding widgets for the sidebar than I really ought to [narcissistic emoticon].
And you all thought I was blogging for your pleasure 😀
